Extraction Method
Eucalyptus oil is obtained by steam distillation of the branches and leaves of Eucalyptus globulus labill.

Characteristics
A colorless, mobile liquid that yellows on going, with a somewhat harsh, comphoraceous odor, and woody sweet undertore. It blends well with thyme, rosemary, lavender, marjoram, pine, cedarwood, and lemon.

Main Constituents
Cineol (70-85 per cent), pinene, limonene, cymene, phellandrene, terpinene, aromadendrene, among others.

Safety Data
Externally non-toxic, non-irritant (in dilution), non-sensitizing. 'When taken internally eucalyptus oil is toxic and as little as 3.5 ml has been reported as fatal'.

Cautions
Eucalyptus oil should be used only infrequently since it is difficult to eliminate through the kidneys. Side effects from the tea or from any of the commercial preparations are extremely rare when directions of dosage is followed. With an overdose (this applies to all essential oils), muscular weakness, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea have been noted. Very few people have developed an allergy to eucalyptus oil. Do not use on broken or irritated skin. Do not use internally.
